female versions of a baller

Can anyone beat UConn?

While your brackets were laughing out loud at you on the men’s side, the UConn Lady Huskies have been annihilating their opponents. I mean these divas are stomping on people; knocking them off one by one. The streak – now at 76 – even had LeBron James and Ray Allen (former UConn player) singing the praises of the team and their accomplishment.

Their most recent victim was the Florida State Seminoles, who they beat by 40 points. FOR-TY freaking points! They have been beating teams by an average of 40-60 points all year. These divas have not lost since 2008, I believe. I mean damn!

Everyone is eager to see if these ladies break the men’s UCLA Bruins’ 88 game winning streak, which ended in 1974 by a loss to  Notre Dame. The Bruin’s record now stands as the longest winning streak in NCAA College Basketball History.

I did see UConn’s game played against Iowa State in the Sweet 16. Oh, boy. This game was some horrendous to watch, y’all. The Iowa State girls looked really perplexed. It just really looked like Iowa State got straight bullied and just did not know what to do. They NEVER had a chance in this game – EVER. The final score was 74-36.  The white flag should have waved after the first half.

Bill Fennelly, Iowa State’s head coach summed up the throttle best. “I don’t think I’ve had a whipping like that since I was a little kid and broke something of my Mom’s.” Damn. Ouch! Like, seriously, how do you recover from that?!

The Lady Huskies will play this weekend (duh) in the Women’s Final Four in San Antonio. And the Women’s Final Four has the usual – Stanford, Oklahoma, Baylor – wait, Baylor?! Yes, Baylor, and it’s all because of Brittney Griner, their 6’8” freshman center. Yes, she is 6’8”. I have only been in the company of one 6’8” person in my life and that’s my ex who also played basketball. When I met him, I could not believe how tall he was and he is a guy! Can you imagine a woman at 6’8”?!

Now, I am not gawking or making fun of Britt because of her height! Neva that! I am a tall girl, myself. I am 5’11” and I like to wear stilettos, pumps, in the club, boom – boom (insider for my LSs)! I think it is wonderful that she has the height and is working the bball court with it. I am just saying that I just have never seen a woman that tall before.

Tina Charles, UConn’s senior center will be tough for Britt, because unlike other centers she’s faced, Tina is 6’4” – plus she can score and is a fierce rebounder. It’s going to be a great matchup. I just want Britt to keep her cool. Everyone knows, earlier this season, she snuck that young lady from Texas Tech! Britt was suspended for some games, and it seems she realized that can’t happen again. I don’t advocate violence by the way. Hugs, people, hugs!

As I digress. Ok, back to UConn.

It’s no shocker that Maya Moore wears #23. Tina Charles is so dominant and the bench is good, too. Geno must know what he is doing and deserves a bust on the campus regardless. He has channeled out players like Diana Taurasi and Rebecca Lobo – who carried their dominance to the WNBA. The wonderful thing about the Lady Huskies, is that people are talking about Women’s Basketball. Yes, they are talking. These ladies have put Women’s Basketball on the map. Hopefully, their determination and quest for excellence will inspire more young girls to play basketball. Hell, this may even help the WNBA stay alive – ok maybe that might be a stretch, so I’ll leave my comments on that for a future post.

SPEAK ON IT =)
