For rookies, it’s tough – especially when you are a non-drafted free agent. After six teams passed on him, finally, he received a phone call. Marlon Favorite, rookie defensive tackle, signed with the New Orleans Saints – just days before the team began its magical journey to Super Bowl XLIV. The rest is history.
I have known Marlon since elementary school. We grew up on the Westbank of New Orleans. We were very active in the community and St. Joseph the Worker, our church parish. See, I knew back then, Marlon was going to shine! He and his friends were guests on my television show, “Becky’s Talent Showcase,” 10 years ago. They rapped which ultimately lead to the formation of his current group, Black Vynm.
The new Super Bowl Champion was gracious enough to speak to an old friend, and here’s some excerpts from our chat.
The Diva: How surreal has the Super Bowl experience been?
Marlon Favorite: All I could really say about the situation is WOW! Overall, it’s just really been amazing. I (am) still speechless about the deal. The whole experience has been through the roof! I am still pinching myself right now.
TD: How does that Vince Lombardi trophy look in person?
MF: Awww, Becky! You know I took a picture of it (the trophy), right? It’s like it (has) been in a vault for years and it came out and is shining bright. I touched and kissed it and everything. It really looks like greatness. It’s a big piece of work.
TD: Your rookie season has been a roller coaster. How were you able to handle all the uncertainty?
MF: My faith has been tested on numerous occasions. This business is insane!
TD: How is your faith incorporated in your career?
MF: It (faith) plays a huge part. (It means) working hard, being dedicated and loving what you do.
TD: Why is it so important for you not to embrace the role as the “typical jock?”
MF: Your character plays a big role in sports. For the most part, I help everybody. I treat everyone with the same respect. That’s just how we were taught in the community and at St. Joe, so I just brought that to sports. I give God the glory, and he is the one who is responsible for my success.
TD: So, what’s next?
MF: My work ethic this offseason depends on how well I come back in shape. You really have to go out there and get it. In training camp, I will put my best foot forward and place myself in the best possible place to become successful.
TD: Lastly, my Mamma has some requests. The next time you are at church she wants two things: a big teddy bear hug and an autograph. You think you can handle that, Superstar?
MF: She got that! Tell her no problem!
